Why Soy Wax?
-
Soy wax is a clean and safe wax compared to paraffin wax
-
Paraffin wax is known to be toxic and unhealthy for the environment.
-
Slow burn and a longer scent.
-
Made from organic non-GMO soy oil, which makes them vegan.
-
Wax is cleaning-burning, biodegradable, natural, vegan, and non-toxic.
Soy Candle and Care
-
Trim the Wick: Before each burn, trim the candle wick to about 1/4 inch (0.6 cm). This prevents excessive soot and mushrooming at the top of the wick, which can lead to uneven burning and a smoky flame.
-
Initial Burn: When you light a soy wax candle for the first time, allow it to burn until the entire surface of the candle is melted. This helps prevent tunneling, where a hole forms in the center of the candle, leaving wax on the sides.
-
Avoid Drafts: Keep the candle away from drafts, as they can cause uneven burning and make the candle melt unevenly.
-
Burn Time: It's recommended to burn a soy wax candle for 1-2 hours for every inch in diameter of the candle. This ensures a full melt pool and prevents tunneling.
-
Extinguish Safely: Use a candle snuffer or gently blow out the flame to extinguish the candle. This prevents the wick from smoking and reduces the risk of hot wax splattering.
-
Refrain from Overburning: Avoid burning a candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Overburning can cause the container to become too hot and compromise its structural integrity.
-
Keep the Wax Pool Clean: Remove any debris, wick trimmings, or matches from the melted wax pool to prevent them from igniting.
-
Storage: Store your soy wax candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and melting.
-
Container Care: If you're using a container candle, make sure the container is clean and free of debris before lighting the candle. Avoid burning a candle when only a small amount of wax remains to prevent overheating the container.
-
Second Burn: For subsequent burns, allow the candle to burn long enough to create a full melt pool, which means the melted wax reaches the edges of the container. This helps prevent tunneling and ensures an even burn.
-
Discontinue Use: When only about 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) of wax remains at the bottom of the container, it's time to discontinue use. Burning the candle beyond this point can overheat the container and cause damage.
-
Remember that proper care not only ensures a better burning experience but also extends the life of your soy wax candle. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations and safety guidelines provided on the candle's packaging.
What the Soy?
Soy wax can undergo several changes in appearance after burning due to the melting, cooling, and solidification processes that occur during and after the candle is lit.
Here are some reasons why soy wax might look different after burning:
-
Melt Pool and Cooling: When you burn a soy wax candle, the heat from the flame melts the wax near the wick, creating a "melt pool." As the candle burns, this melt pool expands and reaches the edges of the container. When you extinguish the flame, the melted wax begins to cool and solidify again.
-
Texture Changes: The texture of soy wax can change as it melts and solidifies. When the wax is melted, it becomes liquid and smooth. As it cools, it solidifies and might develop a slightly rougher or uneven surface.
-
Frosting: One common phenomenon in soy wax candles is called "frosting." Frosting appears as a white, powdery coating on the surface of the candle. This is caused by the natural crystallization of the soy wax as it cools. Frosting is a natural characteristic of soy wax and doesn't affect the quality or performance of the candle.
-
Color Variations: The color of the melted and cooled soy wax can sometimes vary. Some dyes or fragrances used in the candle can affect the color when melted. Additionally, the way the wax solidifies and refracts light might also contribute to slight color variations.
-
Scent Release: The scent of a soy wax candle becomes more pronounced and noticeable when the wax is melted. As the fragrance oils mix with the melted wax, they release their aroma into the air, creating a scented atmosphere.
-
Appearance of the Wick: After burning, the wick might appear slightly charred or blackened at the tip. This is normal and happens as the wick burns and carbonizes in the presence of the flame.
It's important to note that these changes are generally normal and expected for soy wax candles. They are part of the natural behavior of the wax as it undergoes the heating and cooling cycles associated with burning. If you're concerned about any changes in the appearance of your soy wax candle, it's a good idea to refer to the manufacturer's guidelines or consult the candle's care instructions to ensure that the candle is being burned properly.
